What began with a simple classified ad, read over a cup of tea at the kitchen table, would grow into one of Nova Scotia’s oldest and most respected real estate firms.

In 1977, Larry Matthews defied popular opinion in small-town, rural Nova Scotia and started his own real estate company. What first appeared as a colour-pencil doodle soon became one of the province’s most recognizable symbols—the bold red “For Sale” sign that would come to represent trust, integrity, and home.

A proud country boy at heart, Larry recognized early on that rural communities deserved real estate services designed with them in mind. He believed deeply in their potential, a belief proven true over his 44 years as founder, broker, owner, and mentor. His success was never measured by office size or accolades, but by the relationships he built—often sitting at his clients’ kitchen tables, listening, guiding, and caring.

A man of faith, Larry understood that many people aren’t reached through traditional pulpits. Through real estate, he became a counselor, a confidant, sometimes a preacher— but always a friend. He helped thousands of people navigate life’s emotional milestones, and nothing made him prouder than serving the children and grandchildren of past clients who wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else.

Family was the foundation of both Larry’s life and Hants Realty Ltd. He was deeply proud to have his wife Peggy, and later his daughters Natasha and Kimberly, by his side throughout the journey. A true entrepreneur, Larry’s ventures spanned industries—from towing and recovery to restaurants, catering, pawn shops, and print shops. Through the Flyer Alliance, he found joy in sharing his stories, always humbled by audiences eager to listen.

As we look to the future, we remain guided by Larry’s unwavering integrity, common sense, and belief in people. His lessons continue to shape our vision, and the dreams of our clients continue to fuel our purpose.
